How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on BraveBasket starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our file cabinet guides, that means your paperwork, your space and how much weight the drawers will carry.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your paperwork and your room

Letter folders, legal folders and a whole household filing system call for different cabinets. We check the drawer size against the folders you use, then the cabinet against your room.

When your space or your stairs limit the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at drawer count, width, depth and height, letter or legal fit, lateral or vertical layout, locks, rails, weight limits and whether the cabinet arrives assembled.

DEVAISE, Staples, MIIIKO and other makers describe their metal, finishes and warranties in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a file cabinet. We look for patterns, like stuck drawers, thin metal, drawers that make the cabinet tip, locks that fail or parts that arrive missing.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A cabinet that's great for a home office may score lower in a guide written for tight spaces.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. File cabinets come in many sizes and versions with similar names, so we check each model name and number, and we only link new units.

We also look for recall notices before we link a model. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every file cabinet we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's instructions. A tall cabinet can tip if more than one drawer is open, so anchor it to a wall as the maker describes and open one drawer at a time.

We make no claims about fire, theft or privacy protection beyond what the maker states, and we label every maker claim.
